Don’t worry! There’s a way to get through it!
Decades of stuff can certainly make you think there is no way you can get through a downsize. Quite frankly it will feel like it is easier to stay than go. How on earth can this be done?
There’s a way to get through it. When you think you can, then you can. Painful as that cliche sounds, it is the truth. It all starts with mind over matter.
Getting into the right headspace is the first hurdle. There are a few tricks and insights I’d like to share…
Surround yourself with people who believe you can do it
If you hang around friends or keep listening to a partner who is remaining negative about downsizing your home, it’s time to seek out some more positive company.
Make a vision board
You don’t need to know exactly where or what you’re looking for. Just think of it for now on a vision board. Start cutting out some pictures of areas you’d like to create in your new home. This will motivate you when thinking about the new space. (it will also help you in the process of deciding what to keep, sell, toss a bit further down the track.)
Set a date.
Make a marker in the diary. Work out what will work for you, what is, and when is your desired date.
Every time I have sat down with a client, we have talked through these exact three points, including when the desired milestone date event will be. Examples from clients I’ve known are: “I’ll be in by Christmas next year”, “By the time my daughter has her baby, we will be downsized”, or “before Joan’s operation, we will be in our new home so she can recover in the new one”
